Andrew Hill

A fiery performance from an innovative pianist

One of the most inventive pianists and composers to emerge during the late 1950s/60s, Andrew Hill (1931-2007) had a strikingly original style that featured him creating unpredictable music that, while grounded in hard bop, looked towards free jazz.

Hill did not record any trio sessions after 1980, being primarily heard either as a piano soloist or with larger groups, so this film clip is a bit of a rarity.

From a festival appearance in Brazil in 2004, Hill displays distinctive chord voicings in a style that is both fiery and thoughtful; he is joined on this stirring performance by bassist Scott Colley and drummer Nasheet Waits
