For decades, tenor-saxophonist Houston Person has epitomized soul on the tenor-sax.

Equally comfortable with piano or organ groups, in jam sessions or in more intimate settings, Person has long been a master at making every note count and letting the music breathe.

For this performance with pianist Emmet Cohen (who sounds pretty soulful himself), bassist Russell Hall, and drummer Kyle Poole, Person plays with the timeless passion of a Gene Ammons, putting plenty of feeling into the melody and his melodic variations of “At Last”; what a sound!

Hard to believe that he was 86 at the time.
