Throughout his long career, pianist Barry Harris has always been one of the top interpreters of the music and styles of Bud Powell, Tadd Dameron, and Thelonious Monk.

Harris has not only developed his own voice within the bebop tradition while paying tribute to the earlier greats, but he has taught a countless number of musicians along the way.

On this fascinating clip from the 1990s, Harris informally digs into a few Thelonious Monk songs, thinking aloud at the piano as he makes up a Monk medley that includes “Ruby, My Dear” and “Epistrophy.”
