The Emmet Cohen Trio with bassist Yasushi Nakamura and drummer Charles Goold are joined by tenor-saxophonist Lew Tabackin and trumpeter Benny Benack III. for Thelonious Monk’s “Blue Monk.”
Tabackin is well featured and heard at his most expressive, playing the melody, displaying a bit of warmth a la Ben Webster, and then tearing into the song with his huge sound.
Benack plays a spectacular solo of his own and, after spots for Cohen and Nakamura, Tabackin takes the song out, having given it a fresh spin.
