While Dexter Gordon’s Blue Note recordings of the early 1960s have been rightfully acclaimed, he was actually at the peak of his powers during the years (1963-76) when he was living in Europe and recording for the Steeplechase label.
This privately-filmed club performance from Denmark in 1971 loses its picture during the piano solo and its sound before the bass solo end, but, despite being incomplete, the playing is wonderful as is the camerawork.
Dexter Gordon, who is in a happy mood, performs a five minute solo filled with creative and joyful ideas before a young dancing audience.
He is joined by an excellent rhythm section consisting of pianist Lars Aegerback, bassist Jens Jefsen, and drummer Ole Streeberg that never loses its momentum; Aegerback’s solo is excellent.
The joy of jazz can be felt and seen throughout this colorful performance.
