Lou Donaldson, who passed away in 2024 at the age of 97, had a beautiful bluesy tone, a style inspired by Charlie Parker, and a very active sense of humor.
At his 97th birthday party on Nov. 3, 2023, an excellent quartet paid tribute to Donaldson (who was present) by playing one of his medium-tempo blues.
Altoist Nick Hempton (who on this piece sounds close to Donaldson), guitarist Peter Bernstein, organist Akiko Tsuraga (a member of Donaldson’s last regular group), and drummer Fukushi Tainaka form the type of quartet that Sweet Lou usually led.
