During the 1970-86 period, Weather Report was one of a handful of pacesetting fusion groups, easily outlasting Chick Corea’s Return To Forever and the Mahavishnu Orchestra.
While keyboardist Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter (usually playing soprano) were the band’s co-leaders throughout its entire existence, there were several different versions of the rest of the group.
One of the strongest editions of Weather Report, just before the better-known combination of electric bassist Jaco Pastorius and drummer Peter Erskine, was the 1974 group which included electric bassist Alphonso Johnson (an innovative player), drummer Darryl Brown, and percussionist Dom Un Romao.
Very much an ensemble band in which, as Zawinul sometimes said, everyone and no one was soloing, the 1974 version of Weather Report is heard and seen at its most inventive and colorful on this version of “Boogie Woogie Waltz.”
