Bright Mississippi – 1989

Renee Rosnes

The pianist is heard early in her career

Renee Rosnes has been a significant jazz pianist since the late 1980s.

For proof of that, this performance from 1989 will suffice.

Joined by bassist Ira Coleman, drummer Billy Drummond and guest tenor George Young, Rosnes plays Thelonious Monk’s “Bright Mississippi,” a song that utilizes the chord changes of “Sweet Georgia Brown.”

Young and Rosnes both take concise solos (three choruses apiece) on a swinging performance with the pianist playing some impressive runs during her spot.
