Juan Tizol’s “Caravan,” which was made famous by Duke Ellington’s orchestra and has been performed in a countless number of settings ever since, actually was first heard on records in 1936 played by a small group led by clarinetist Barney Bigard.
In 1968 pianist Art Hodes had a television series called Jazz Alley that featured his trio playing traditional jazz along with guests.
Hodes and Bigard are joined by bassist Rails Wilson and drummer Bob Cousins for a brief version of “Caravan” that is most notable for the hypnotic rhythm played by Hodes and Wilson.
