Now that his sound has reached every corner of the world and back, it’s easy to forget what a revolutionary effect Armstrong had not only on jazz, but on the entire world of popular of music.
As impressive as his musical innovation was his ability to sustain his career and popularity decade after decade through multiple changes in taste and style and remarkably, hostility from some jazz critics who felt he was “old hat.” The absurdity of that 1950s era opinion is obvious now. Pops was an “old hat” at Mozart or Bach.
