Jan Garbarek always had a haunting and distinctive sound on the tenor, becoming well known outside of his native Norway when he was part of Keith Jarrett’s European Quartet during 1974-79.

Although originally an avant-gardist, by the 1970s Garbarek had developed a much more melodic style that was inspired by Scandinavian folk songs, and he became a natural artist for the ECM label.

“Clouds In The Mountain” (not to be mistaken with “Mountain In The Clouds” which was recorded by Joe Henderson in 1969 and on a Terje Rypdal ECM album in 1981) is a piece that features Garbarek in a trio with bassist Miroslav Vitous and drummer Peter Erskine.

This 1993 live performance took place two years after the studio recording by the same trio.

Garbarek makes a lyrical statement on which he caresses the melody and displays both his unique tone and range, and there are solo spots for a thoughtful Vitous and a subtle Erskine.
