A giant of Latin music since the early 1960s, pianist Eddie Palmieri has long been an innovator in Afro-Cuban jazz and salsa, in his piano playing, which is influenced by McCoy Tyner and Chick Corea, and in his use of different instrumentations.
This clip from 2012 of “De Palo Pa’ Rumba” features singing by Herman Olivera, exciting ensemble work by Puente’s big band, an inventive piano solo, some heated playing from trumpeter Brian Lynch, and stirring percussion.
This is a performance that is equally rewarding for dancers and viewers.
