Monk takes to the airways
Composed by Thelonious Monk in 1944, it has subsequently been elaborated on by many artists, as it is a jazz standard. Those artists have included really big names like Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie.
Monk’s improvisational style made him stand out, as did his myrid contributions to the standard repertoire of jazz. It’s fascinating that he’s the second-most recorded jazz composer ever, after Duke Ellington. But Ellington recorded over 900 more songs to Monk’s 70-some.
