Del Sasser – 1960
Cannonball Adderley
A burning performance

Unlike many of his contemporaries, altoist Cannonball Adderley’s playing was always full of joy and exuberance.
One of his greatest periods was during his years with the Riverside label (1959-63) when he recorded many hard-swinging gems.
At the 1960 Newport Jazz Festival Adderley and his regular quintet performed bassist Sam Jones’ “Del Sasser.”
Cannonball is in excellent form, his brother cornetist Nat Adderley is heard very much in his prime, and pianist Barry Harris practically steals the show during his boppish solo.
However Adderley’s closing statement (with strong support throughout from bassist Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes) takes honors.
