The tremendous success of “The Girl From Ipanema” in 1963 has somewhat overshadowed the fact that bossa-nova’s first big hit in the United States, and the original reason that it caught on, was the Stan Getz/Charlie Byrd album Jazz Samba.
Their version of Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Desafinado” from that album launched the bossa nova craze and is a classic; pity that Getz and Byrd never recorded together after that.
In 1962, Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd appeared on the Perry Como Show, performing “Desafinado” and (with Como) a short bossa-nova version of “It Happened In Monterey.”
