There is no movement without rhythm

From the village of Baro in the country of Niger

The word the Malinke tribes use for for rhythm is “foli”

But it covers much more than drumming, dancing or sound.

It’s something that is found in every part of daily life.

In this video you can hear and feel the rhythm and also see it.

The melodies and harmonies and instruments of jazz came from Europe, but make no mistake about it: The driving force, the heartbeat, the soul, the deep human intelligence of jazz, is a product of the genius of Africa.

Jazz is a fusion.

Note: These dancers are not imitating us. We’ve been imitating them.
