Vijay Iyer has long been known as an adventurous pianist and composer whose music is often quite intellectual and avant-garde.
However Iyer is a well-rounded player who has also been known to play music more in the modern mainstream of jazz for variety.
On his original “Down To The Wire,” which he performs with bassist Stephan Crump and drummer Marcus Gilmore, Iyer explores several moods, starting out with a thoughtful statement before the music becomes a bit intense, includes a brief drum solo, and concludes with a sense of urgency that fits its title.
