A major and influential jazz pianist since the mid-1990s, Brad Mehldau has always had an original style, touched a bit perhaps by Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett but quite influential on other pianists of the past 20 years.
In the fall of 2020, he performed a concise solo concert in an empty hall.
After a brief “Waking Up,” Mehldau talks about his suite “April 2020” and then performs its four sections: Stepping Outside, Keeping Distance, Stopping Listening Hearing, and Remembering Before All This.
After that mostly somber and thought-provoking suite, he finishes his recital with a medium-tempo “Here’s That Rainy Day” and John Coltrane’s “Satellite.”
