Mark Murphy (1932-2015) was one of the finest of all male jazz singers, a vocalist never afraid to take chances in his vocal flights yet always able to bring out the beauty in ballads.

On this appearance from 1981 with pianist Bill Mays, bassist Monte Budwig, and drummer Chiz Harris, Murphy takes Annie Ross’ vocalese lyrics on “Farmer’s Market’ as a launching pad and builds his solo from there.

He concludes his segment by putting plenty of feeling and adventure into the love song “Again.”
