Lionel Hampton was a popular and influential vibraphonist for 60 years.

While he had many popular records, none were as famous as his 1941 recording of “Flying Home” with its honking Illinois Jacquet tenor solo.

On this version from 1957, Hampton begins his playing on “Flying Home” by quoting liberally from Jacquet’s solo before launching one of his own.

“Flying Home” never failed to excite and that is certainly true of this concise but typically stirring version.
