In this 1968 concert in Denmark, Sonny Rollins performs “Four.”
Rollins is accompanied by Danish bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and American expats Kenny Drew and Albert “Tootie” Heath. During the 1960s, Copenhagen became a refuge for American jazz musicians looking to escape stifling recording contracts, racism, and a declining American interest in the genre.
Among the other musicians who relocated to Denmark were Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster, and Stuff Smith.
