Ethel Waters, backed by a band including Roy Eldridge and Coleman Hawkins, sings “Goodnight Sweet Blues” on this 1961 episode of the TV series Route 66.
Legendary vocalist Ethel Waters guest stars as Jennie, a dying blues singer who wants to gather her original band for one last performance. In this scene, Jennie finally reunites her band and performs the tune “Goodnight Sweet Blues.”
The episode was groundbreaking for its predominantly black cast and the casting of actual jazz musicians as members of Jennie’s band.
