Russell Malone has been a major jazz guitarist for the past 30 years, always playing with swing, versatility, a deep knowledge of music history (from 1920s jazz to the present), and wit.
On “Gut Bucket Blues” with pianist Emmet Cohen, bassist Russell Hall, and drummer Evan Sherman, Malone shows that he could have been a big attraction on the blues circuit if he had chosen that path.
In a rare lowdown blues solo, he rocks out with plenty of passion, giving Buddy Guy a run for his money and delighting the smiling Cohen who comes up with a rather unique solo of his own.
