While Joni Mitchell would never consider herself a jazz singer, she has occasionally interacted quite well with jazz musicians through the years.

On Aug. 29, 1987, she was the main guest on Showtime Coast To Coast, a program hosted by Herbie Hancock.

On “Hejira,” she sings at the beginning and then lets the band stretch out.

This gives one a rare opportunity to see David Sanborn and Wayne Shorter jamming together, with the passionate Sanborn clearly inspired by Shorter’s presence.

Also seen enjoying the performance is Bobby McFerrin who shakes some percussion and sings a bit near the conclusion of this unique performance.

Personnel:

Joni Mitchell, vocal
David Sanborn, alto
Wayne Shorter, soprano
Herbie Hancock, electric keyboard
Larry Klein, bass guitar
Vinnie Colaiuta, drums
Steve Thornton, percussion
Bobby McFerrin, voice, percussion
