Archie Shepp was one of the leaders of the 1960s jazz avant-garde, developing a sound influenced by Ben Webster and an emotional free-form approach to improvising that was different than everyone else’s.
Starting in the 1970s, Shepp also played standards (typically in his own way), often teaming up with pianist Horace Parlan.
Shepp and Parlan (who was stricken by polio as a child which resulted in him only being able to use three fingers in his right hand) are joined by bassist Wayne Dockery and drummer Steve Mc Craven for a version of “Here’s That Rainy Day” that is both melodic and adventurous.
