Throughout his career, Wynton Marsalis has displayed plenty of flexibility in the music that he performs, ranging from adventurous new works to revivals of 1920s jazz.

With his septet (trombonist-singer Chris Crenshaw, clarinetist Victor Goines, pianist Sean Mason, banjoist Don Vappie, bassist Carlos Henriquez, and drummer Jason Marsalis), Marsalis performs a number originally recorded by Louis Armstrong’s Hot Five (with guitarist Lonnie Johnson) in 1927.

The trumpeter plays a fresh solo in the tradition, Goines and Vappie have their spots, and Crenshaw sings a bit like Armstrong note-wise but without copying his voice.

The performance concludes with some spirited ensembles, played creatively within the foundations of early jazz.
