Maynard Ferguson (1928-2006) was a dazzling trumpeter, one who in the 1950s hit higher notes than any other jazz trumpeter up to that point.
He never lost that ability and was pure excitement on stage, particularly when he was in front of a big band.
Ferguson led his best orchestra during 1957-65 and, while he often featured his sidemen (which in 1960 included pianist Jaki Byard and trombonist Slide Hampton), this brief but exhilarating clip from the Ed Sullivan Show is very much his showcase.
Maynard Ferguson is featured on valve trombone, baritone horn and trumpet, sounding quite powerful and energetic on each horn.
