Lucky Thompson (1924-2005) was a consistently swinging and fluent tenor-saxophonist who had a very episodic career with plenty of ups and downs.

Thompson, who tended to be overshadowed by other innovators in the United States, enjoyed some of his finest years while in Europe, including a busy period in the 1950s.

This early clip from 1957 finds Thompson swinging hard on a version of “I’ll Remember April” with pianist Martial Solal, bassist Pierre Michelot and drummer Kenny Clarke.
