Pianist McCoy Tyner, who came to fame with the John Coltrane Quartet of 1961-65, created some of his most powerful performances during the 1970s and ‘80s when he was a leader.

A very influential pianist whose percussive chordings and adventurous solos were emulated by countless others, Tyner is heard at the head of a remarkable all-star quintet from the 1986 Jazz Ost-West Festival in Nurnberg, Germany.

Tyner teams up with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, tenor-saxophonist Joe Henderson, bassist Avery Sharpe and drummer Louis Hayes on a blistering version of his “Inner Glimpse.”

The film unfortunately ends right near the performance’s conclusion, but there are plenty of fireworks to enjoy.
