Seven years after Duke Ellington’s death, an all-star televised tribute took place.
Sarah Vaughan (1924-90) and Joe Williams (1918-99), two of the greatest jazz singers of all time, rarely performed together despite enjoying each other’s talents.
On “It Don’t Mean A Thing,” after a chorus of the melody, the two classic singers scat up a storm.
Although Sarah Vaughan was impossible to top, Joe Williams does well, while backed by a big band headed by pianist Billy Taylor.
