During 1954-56, J. J. Johnson (1924-2001) and Kai Winding (1922-83), two of the top trombonists to emerge during the bebop era, teamed up in a two-trombone quintet that was surprisingly popular.
Johnson and Winding, both of whom had illustrious careers, had occasional reunions after that, with the last one taking place in 1982.
With pianist Tommy Flanagan leading the rhythm section, J.J. and Kai are featured on a 1982 Japanese television show playing a cooking version of “It’s Alright With Me,” showing that their musical magic was still there.
