Although he loved to perform ballads and swing standards, Joe Williams was at his best when singing the blues.

He always appeared spontaneous even when performing one of his more predictable routines because he gave such life and personality to the words that he interpreted.

For this brief performance from 1960 while accompanied by Count Basie and a rhythm section, Williams gives one the impression that he is singing from the heart while making up the words along the way; it is quite effective.
