Jazz Crimes

Joshua Redman

Some fascinating music from Redman and the Elastic Band

In addition to his own quartets, tenor-saxophonist Joshua Redman has been involved in several co-op groups through the years.

The Elastic Band, which recorded the album Elastic in 2002, was very much a musical democracy featuring Redman, organist Sam Yahel and drummer Brian Blade.

On this film clip, which has the first half of a performance of “Jazz Crimes,” the group starts off with the rhythmically tricky theme which has polyrhythms galore.

Their rendition, with Redman in the lead throughout, travels through several different moods.

The highpoint is when the tenor-saxophonist jumps between different registers as if he is having a fascinating musical conversation with himself.

Personnel:

Brian Blade, drums
