It has often been said that to be a mature and vital jazz musician, one has to be able to caress a ballad.

Dexter Gordon, who performed and recorded a countless number of medium and uptempo performances over several decades, also knew how to embrace a ballad and let the melody speak for itself.

This warm version of “Laura” features the great tenor with pianist George Cables, bassist Rufus Reid, and drummer Eddie Gladden on Feb. 27, 1978.
