Lemon Drop – 1965

Terry Gibbs

Some typically rapid playing by vibraphonist Terry Gibbs

Terry Gibbs, who celebrated his 100th birthday on Oct. 13, 1924 and was one of the greatest vibraphonists of all time, was always famous for playing and talking fast.

He was the musical director of the Regis Philbin Show for several years.

After a bit of joking around, Gibbs leads his sextet through a stirring version of “Lemon Drop,” a piece that he first recorded with Woody Herman in the late 1940s.

Gibbs is joined by pianist Mike Melvoin, the obscure but talented Carrington Visor on flute, guitarist Herb Ellis, bassist Monty Budwig, and drummer Colin Bailey.
