Saxophonist and composer Roscoe Mitchell was born on August 3rd, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois.

After serving in the military, Mitchell became one of the first members of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, a non-profit collective dedicated to cutting-edge jazz.

Throughout the ‘60s and ‘70s, Mitchell played with various avant-garde jazz groups, the most notable of which being the Art Ensemble of Chicago.

Mitchell deliberately performs with young musicians to pass along his knowledge.

Mitchell would become among the first members of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians in 1965.

During the 1990s the saxophonist began to experiment with classical music and has made it a point to work with younger musicians in order to pass along his knowledge.

Roscoe Mitchell is featured perfroming at Cafe Oto in London in October 2012.
