Michigan native and trumpeter Donald Byrd was one of few bebop artists who pushed soul and funk forward – all without leaving his root genre of jazz. With Byrd, it’s difficult to imagine how Herbie Hancock would have made his way so quickly to the top of the game.

Two years before this performance Byrd had left Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, soon performing with such luminaries as Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins.

Personnel:

Donald Byrd, trumpet
Bobby Jaspar, flute
Walter Davis, Jr., piano
Doug Watkins, bass
Art Taylor, drums
