One of the finest jazz singers of the 1950s and ‘60s, Carmen McRae is featured on Ralph Gleason’s Jazz Casual program on Mar. 15, 1962.

Accompanied by the Norman Simmons Trio, Ms. McRae is featured on “I’m Gonna Lock My Heart And Throw Away The Key,” “Trouble Is A Man,” “If You Never Fall In Love With Me,” “’Round Midnight” and “Love For Sale,” singing in a relaxed, informal and swinging manner.

She also chats a bit with Gleason, talking about what qualities make a jazz singer.

Unfortunately when Carmen McRae sits at the piano for “Exactly Like You,” the time quickly runs out, but otherwise this is one of the best of the Jazz Casual shows.

Personnel:

Carmen McRae, vocals
Norman Simmons, piano
Victor Sproles, bass
Walter Perkins, drums
