Tenor-saxophonist Ricky Ford became known in the jazz world when he worked with Charles Mingus (1976-77), Danny Richmond, Mingus Dynasty, and Abdullah Ibrahim.
While he gained some fame in the 1980s, Ford has had a lower profile in the U.S. since moving to Paris in the 1990s although he has remained quite active and has continued displaying an original sound on his tenor.
His “Love Lament,” performed in 2021 with pianist John Kordalewski, electric bass guitarist Jerome Harris, and drummer Barry Altschul, is a complex yet heartfelt tune that sounds like something that Charles Mingus would have been happy to play.
