A major arranger since he wrote (and played tenor) for Stan Kenton’s orchestra in the early 1950s, Bill Holman has been leading a big band in the Los Angeles area for decades.

Holman’s writing features crowded yet perfectly coherent ensembles, complex background figures behind soloists, and challenging music that is also quite exciting.

For this 2019 concert, his band performs a reinvented version of Dizzy Gillespie’s “Dizzy Atmosphere;” the soloists are Ron Stout and Jonathan Dane on trumpets and altoist Bruce Williams.
