Among the early jazz violinists, Stuff Smith (1909-67) held a prominent place alongside Joe Venuti and Stephane Grappelli, collectively forming the trio known as the “big three.”

Renowned for his exuberant swing and unparalleled energy, Smith possessed a distinctive style that saw him coaxing melodies from his violin as if it were a saxophone. His notable presence graced the stages of 52nd Street, where he led the Onyx Club Boys, a group that also showcased the talents of trumpeter Jonah Jones, during the latter part of the 1930s. Notably, he later relocated to Europe, where he continued his musical journey until his passing in 1967.

In this rendition of “Lullaby Of Broadway,” captured during the 1958 television show Art Ford’s Jazz Party, Stuff Smith’s vibrant artistry takes center stage. With a compelling blend of swing and elegance, he masterfully interprets the song at a slow-medium tempo, seamlessly accompanied by a skillful rhythm section that includes pianist Johnny Guarnieri.
