To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band’s first recordings in 1917 (which were the earliest jazz recordings), Dan Levinson and his Roof Garden Jass Band performed a show honoring the ODJB.
In his career Levinson (on clarinet, C-melody sax and tenor) has frequently paid homage to early jazz artists while developing his own style within classic jazz.
The ODJB recorded “Margie” in 1920 and, although they added a C-melody saxophone for that performance, Levinson and his quintet manage to sound exactly like the earlier band, even including a chorus of “Singin’ The Blues,” just like on the original record.
Featured on this ensemble performance are clarinetist Levinson, cornetist Mike Davis, trombonist Matt Musselman, pianist Jeff Barnhart, and drummer Kevin Dorn.
