A rousing performance with a big band

James Carter, a remarkable saxophonist who can play in any style, was involved for a time in exploring the music of Django Reinhardt.

On this concert from 2015 with the Amazing Keystone Big Band, the brilliant acoustic guitarist Stochelo Rosenberg, and a very good accordionist (Marian Badoi), Carter performs an uptempo version of Reinhardt’s “Minor Swing.”

James Carter takes a soprano solo that, while hinting at Sidney Bechet in spots, is very much in his own passionate style.

The big band is excellent, the tradeoff between accordion, guitar and soprano is quite exciting, and this stirring performance builds up for chorus after chorus.
