A swinging version of the Erroll Garner hit

In 1965, organist Richard “Groove” Holmes had a hit with his version of “Misty,” playing the Erroll Garner ballad at a swinging double time.

Many organists have emulated that version ever since, and its influence is certainly felt in this 2003 jam session.

For the date, the late great organist Joey DeFrancesco is joined by guitarist Larry Carlton, Chris Farr on tenor, bassist Gerald Veasley, drummer Byron Landham, and percussionist Emedin Rivera.

While all of the musicians play well on this grooving version, DeFrancesco takes honors as usual, showing once again that he was the successor to Jimmy Smith as the King of Jazz Organists.
