Gerald Clayton, the son of bassist-arranger John Clayton and the nephew of altoist Jeff Clayton, has developed into a major modern jazz pianist.

While he normally performs his own originals, Clayton is quite adept at playing standards in a fresh and personal way.

“My Ideal” is a ballad from the 1940s that Clayton has developed some affection for as he shows on this solo piano performance; he digs into the mood of the song and does not state its full melody until the final chorus.
