Moanin’

Charles Mingus

Mingus: April 22, 1922 – January 5, 1979

Jazz standard “Moanin'” developed from a riff that pianist Bobby Timmons used to play while between songs, with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Having overheard it, tenor sax player Benny Golson advised Timmons to add a bridge.

In this recording, for the 1993 album “Nostalgia in Times Square,” Charles Mingus’ group features the baritone sax stylings of Ronnie Cuber.
