A major jazz violinist since the late 1980s, Regina Carter’s name deserves to be placed alongside such immortals as Joe Venuti, Stephane Grappelli, Stuff Smith, and Jean-Luc Ponty.
On this version of “My Favorite Things” (inspired more by John Coltrane than by Julie Andrews), Carter stretches out with the always enthusiastic and inventive pianist Emmet Cohen, bassist Russell Hall, and drummer Kyle Poole.
After Cohen’s solo, the violinist builds up her improvisation from being quiet and peaceful to a more passionate level, taking the song to its climax.
