Throughout his life, trumpeter-singer Chet Baker performed “My Funny Valentine” a countless number of times.
This version from in Torino, Italy in 1959, is arguably his finest.
A sunglass-wearing Baker sings “My Funny Valentine” with backing by an international group including the great Swedish baritonist Lars Gullin and Italian pianist Romano Mussolini (son of you-know-who).
Baker’s voice was at its prime and he hits some surprisingly high notes.
His quietly emotional trumpet solo is followed by an equally compelling statement from baritonist Gullin before Chet Baker’s vocal brings this memorable performance to a close.
