Melba Liston (1926-89) was an excellent trombonist who became best known as an arranger.
One of the first female trombonists to be playing in otherwise all-male big bands, Liston held her own on a record date with Dexter Gordon in 1947, worked in the big bands of Gerald Wilson, Dizzy Gillespie and Quincy Jones, and wrote colorful and innovative arrangements for Randy Weston.
Here she is in 1960 with the Quincy Jones Orchestra, being showcased on “My Reverie.”
