Bill Evans, whose chord voicings and close interplay with his sidemen changed the way that piano trios sound in jazz, must have really loved the song “Nardis.”
Counting studio sessions, live dates and bootleg albums, there are at least 50 versions of Evans performing “Nardis” dating from 1958-80.
While Miles Davis copyrighted the song, the chances are that Evans was actually its composer as he later claimed.
This rendition from 1970 has Evans, bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Marty Morell performing in an informal setting.
For this performance, “Nardis” begins as a ballad but really gets cooking, featuring solos by all three musicians; Evans looks happy with the results.
